Beginner's Guide

Everyone starts their journey at day one! Whether you've been dying to try pole for years or you've been inspired to start burlesque after seeing a recent show, we've got you covered. This page focuses mainly on how to get started with pole, but we have included more info about our other beginner-friendly dance classes towards the end!

Beginner Pole Dancing

If you've never touched a pole before, or you've not poled for a little while, we have two main options to get you started!

Pole Fundamentals:
12-Week Course

Our Pole Fundamental Course runs only 1-2 times a year and is for people who are really ready to sink their teeth in to something new and exciting! You'll build all of the skills, strength and confidence needed to flourish in your pole classes, and you'll do it as part of a group all working towards the same goals. We're really excited about and proud of this course and we have a lot to share about it - click below for more details!

Pole Syllabus: Beginners
(Drop-In Classes)

If attending a course isn't feasible for you, then our drop-in Pole Syllabus classes may be a better fit! In these classes you'll work on a selection of pole moves from Levels 1-2 in our Pole Syllabus, looking at something new each week. These classes are suitable for complete beginners and for people who have recently completed Pole Fundamentals and want to spend a little longer practicing the basics. Unlike our Pole Fundamentals course, these classes don't run on directly from the previous week and can be taken as stand-alone classes. These classes run in between our Pole Fundamentals courses. Make sure you HEY-FRIEND as your discount code for 50% off your first class!

Some Common Questions...

How much do classes cost?

Our Pole Syllabus classes are £12 each, or you can opt in to one of our recurring memberships to save money on these and bag yourself some extra perks. Don't forget to use the discount code HEY-FRIEND to get 50% off your first drop-in class! Our Pole Fundamentals course is £120 and can be split across 3 equal payments if you prefer.

Do you run private lessons?

Yes! You can book private lessons with any of our instructors for any class style they're qualified and experienced in. Private lessons start from £30 per person and you may add a few friends on for an additional cost. Prices and availability differs between instructors and the best way to book is to contact your preferred instructor directly! If you're unsure where to start, please email shona@provocafit.co.uk

What happens in my first class?

In your first class, your instructor will greet you and introduce themselves. If you're booked on to a course, we'll spend 5 minutes for everyone to introduce themselves to each other. After this, your instructor will lead everyone through a warm up to get you ready for the lesson. You'll spend most of the class learning some cool new things and having a great time, before having 5 minutes before the end of the lesson to recap and take any photos or videos if that's your thing (we always recommend it if you're happy to!). The class will finish with a group cool down before you head on your way and have a well earned bath/dinner/drink!

What should I wear/bring with me?

Shorts and a vest top/sports bra are great for pole as bare skin helps with lots of moves. For your first class, leggings or joggers and a t-shirt will be fine. Try to arrive with your pole kit underneath your usual clothes, as our changing space is limited. Bare feet or socks on your feet - we love our heels but they're not practical for most people during their beginner classes (there'll be plenty of time for those later!). You'll want to bring a water bottle, a hand towel and maybe something warm to wear for the warm up/cool down.

Are there any age restrictions?

There is no upper age limit for our classes. You must be over the age of 18 to attend any Provocafit classes.

Can I start pole if I'm not strong/flexible/fit?

Our pole classes are suitable for almost anybody and you don't need to be strong or flexible or fit to start! If you're able to raise your arms straight above your head and you can stand on your tiptoes, you're good to go. If you can't do these things, we can still accommodate you in private lessons to assess whether you could learn safely in a group setting. There are a number of medical conditions and injuries that may affect whether or not pole is suitable for you, please see our Ts and Cs for a full list of these.

Can I park at the studio?

We don't have any private parking but there is plenty of on-street parking around the studio, most of which has no restrictions after 6pm. During the day, some roads are restricted to 1-2 hours. Make sure you check this before leaving your car! We're also a 5 minute walk from Loughborough train station and several main bus routes pass by the studio, including the Sprint bus from Loughborough Uni.

More Beginner-Friendly Classes

If pole isn't your bag, we have plenty more for you to sink your teeth into! All of our non-pole classes are suitable for complete beginners. You can book any of these at any time - don't forget to sign up to our mailing list to receive a discount for your first class!

Burlesque

Burlesque is a wonderfully accessible form of dance and fitness that will get you moving, smiling and socialising from the moment you step foot in the studio. Our burlesque classes run in 2-week blocks, and we learn a brand new routine each time! We encourage you to attend both sessions if you can but you can book just 1 of the classes if you prefer. Each routine will include one strip tease element (optional) and a fun choreography in a different burlesque style each time. Learn more here.

Hips, Heels & Feels

This 2-week commercial heels block is a celebration of sensuality, empowerment, and self-expression! You'll practice the art of dancing in heels, connecting mind and body for an immersive dance experience. Join us for two weeks of self-indulgent movement where each sway, strut, and turn is an invitation to embrace the beauty of your own individual style. We’ll learn a routine over two weeks, giving you time to practice the choreo and get to know it well enough to dance it with all of the feels! Like burlesque, we strongly recommend attending both classes if you're able but you're welcome to pop along to just one if you prefer! Suitable for all levels – complete beginners welcome! Learn more here.

Chair Dance

In our chair dance classes, you'll learn a new chair trick or trick combo at the beginning of the class, before learning a short, sexy style chair choreography incorporating your new trick! The choreography and tricks are tailored to the level of the class, and there will be plenty of options available for differing abilities, meaning this class is suitable for new starters. Learn more about our chair classes here.

Filthy Floorwork and Silky Floor Flow

We run two weekly floorwork classes: Silky Floor Flow on a Monday and Filthy Floorwork on a Thursday. Both of these are choreography classes, where you'll learn a short new floor-based routine each week. Expect sliding, rolling, balancing, clacking, and generally having a great time getting to know the floor in the sexiest way possible! Heels are optional for this class, and kneepads are essential! Learn more about our floor classes here.

Yoga

Jane Silk teaches yoga suitable for all levels, including complete beginners. A great way to connect your mind and body whilst increasing your overall wellbeing and mobility. Jane brings their classes together with a focus on calming the mind for mental health, offering adjustments for all bodies, all levels and having fun within the class because yoga doesn't have to always be so serious!

See what our students have to say!

I’ve been attending pole/dance classes at ProvocaFIT for a little over a year now and I truly could not recommend more! Shona has not only created an amazing, welcoming, and inclusive studio, but also a safe and supportive community where people of all ages, backgrounds, and experience levels can come and express themselves freely.

Shona is creative with her routines and song choices, and also with class and workshop offerings - ensuring that even regular students will never get bored or feel like they are running out of new things to learn. As a former dancer, I have loved trying out floorwork, commercial heels, and chair, plus pole tricks and choreography. If you’re looking for a fun new hobby, different types of movement, good workouts, and the best instructors/classmates cheering you on, check out ProvocaFIT!
